Turmeric is a tropical perennial plant in the same family as ginger. It is native to India and is now cultivated around the world. The herb grows to a height of about three feet (one meter) and bears lance-shaped leaves in pairs on alternate sides of the stem, with a base that contains a knobby rhizome that resembles ginger.
Curcuma longa has a history of use spanning millennia and is considered energetically hot. For thousands of years, this plant has been incorporated into Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine for its healthful properties and was recognized by the Greeks in ancient writings of Dioscorides. Turmeric root’s main constituent, curcumin, is thought to be responsible for many of the rhizome’s vivid colors.
